Salt Lake City's Water, By the Numbers
Salt Lake City Public Utilities says more than 60 percent of its water starts in mountain streams from the Wasatch canyons, and that it adds deep wells in summer. The city notes that the well water is harder, with more minerals than the canyon water.
The city's 2026 Drinking Water Quality Report puts numbers on that. Its three canyon treatment plants measured about 8.0, 10.2 and 12.4 grains per gallon of hardness, while its wells and springs ranged from about 9.6 up to 33.4 grains per gallon. Anything over 10.5 grains per gallon is considered very hard.
Getting the Most From Your Water in Salt Lake City
