I'm on city water. Do I still need a softener?
Most likely, yes. City treatment makes water safe to drink, but it doesn't remove the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, and water across the Wasatch Front is hard. If you see white crust on faucets or spots on dishes, that's the hardness a softener removes.
What's the difference between a water softener and a salt-free conditioner?
A softener uses salt and ion exchange to actually remove hardness minerals, so you get truly soft water. A salt-free conditioner keeps the minerals in the water but stops them from sticking to pipes and appliances as scale, with no salt, no drain line and no electricity. If you want soft-feeling water and spot-free glass, choose a softener; if your main concern is protecting your plumbing without salt, a conditioner works.
Will a softener make my drinking water salty?
Not in the way most people worry about. Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium, and the harder your water, the more sodium is added. If you're watching sodium, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink removes it from your drinking and cooking water.
If I install a softener, do I still need reverse osmosis?
They solve different problems. A softener protects your whole home from hardness, while reverse osmosis purifies the water you drink by removing dissolved solids, and much of the chlorine taste as well. Many Salt Lake Valley homes pair the two: softener at the main line, RO at the kitchen sink.
